One of the questions asked often, is "what is the best all-inclusive resort for vegans"? The whole point of planning a vacation to an all-inclusive resort is to kick-back and relax, and you can't do that if you're worried about finding something to eat. But while typically you may be used to searching out "best vegan travel destinations" or "vegan restaurants in [place]", finding out which all-inclusive resorts cater to vegans seems a little more challenging. Let me help...
To my knowledge, there is not yet a vegan all-inclusive resort. But some are incorporating vegan restaurants, and some are certainly more vegan-friendly than others. So without further ado here are some options for your next vegan vacation in Mexico, Jamaica and elsewhere:
GRAND VELAS RESORTS
Velas Resorts have a collection of exclusive luxury resorts in Mexico - Riviera Nayarit, Riviera May and Los Cabos. With contemporary luxury accommodations, world-class spas, gourmet restaurants, and gorgeous landscapes, they each offer an indefinable hospitality experience. They have earned 26 AAA Diamonds, including the prestigious Five Diamond Award.
The Velas Resorts in Mexico are famous for their flagship restaurants: Frida (Mexican), Lucca (Italian) and Piaf (French). Noticing that they were getting more and more requests for vegan modifications, which chefs would have to create on the spot, Velas tapped celebrity vegan chef Miguel Bautista to create vegan tasting menus for all of their restaurants.
AM Resorts include Zoetry, Secrets, Breathless, Dreams, Now, Reflect and Sunscape. They have locations in Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama and Curacao. I have completed the Master Agent certification with AM Resorts and with the exception of Dreams Puerto Aventuras which has captive dolphins on site, these are among my favourite resorts to recommend to clients.
One of the reasons I like AM Resorts so much is the Unlimited-Luxury® privileges, which include all meals and top-shelf spirits, but more than that is wristband-free with no reservations required for a la cartes. Plus 24 hour room service. Special menu items include vegetarian, gluten-free, sugar-free, organic, but not vegan at this time. However, chefs will happily accommodate in my experience.
THE EXCELLENCE COLLECTION
The Excellence Collection includes Beloved Hotels (Playa Mujeres, Mexico), Finest Resorts (Playa Mujeres, Mexico; & opening 2020, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic), Exellence (Playa Mujeres, Mexico; Riviera Cancun, Mexico; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; El Carmen, Dominican Republic; Oyster Bay, Jamaica).
Excellence is well known for focusing on attention to detail, luxury accommodations, fine cuisine and other elements that help to create the perfect environment to enhance the vacation experience. The Excellence Collection properties are recognized within the industry for their quality and exceptional service.
In each resort, breakfast and lunch buffets feature separate vegetarian zones with vegan options. And at dinner, every restaurant offers a full vegetarian menu with vegan options. As well, guests say the chefs are very accommodating and happy when it comes to vegan meals. Excellence Riviera Cancun does feature a completely vegetarian and vegan restaurant on property. Yaay!
With oceanfront resorts overlooking the sparkling turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Palace Resorts offers high standards for five-star all-inclusive vacations in Mexico and Jamaica. The properties include Beach Palace, Sun Palace, Moon Palace Cancún, Le Blanc Spa Resorts Cancún, The Grand At Moon Palace Cancun, Cozumel Palace, Moon Palace Jamaica, Isla Mujeres Palace, Playacar Palace, and Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos.
Each Palace Resort offer spacious accommodations, a luxury spa, exciting activities, and nightly entertainment.
To assure they get the food they want, guests at Palace Resorts can actually set up their own “food card,” a feature that helps travelers with food allergies and other dietary restrictions. A hotel concierge helps each guest draft the card, so he or she can show it at all the property’s dining locations.
BODYHOLIDAY ST. LUCIA
A fun and engaging luxury spa retreat which encourages guests to do as much - or as little - as they want in terms of well-being, fitness, eating and drinking, sight-seeing and lazing on the beach. Definitely an ideal place for a solo trip, September in particular is designated for solo travelers; also great for couples and groups of friends.
The all-inclusive BodyHoliday resort's extensive programme of classes and activities includes everything from archery to scuba diving and spinning to Pilates, as well as personalised fitness training from special guest trainers. There are also more adventurous pursuits to engage in.
They are also dedicated to serving the culinary tastes and preferences of every guest. The culinary team is experienced in handling requests for gluten free, celiac, diabetic, low carb and low fat choices, as well as vegetarian and vegan, and you are invited to indicated to indicate your dietary preferences before you arrive. A newer addition, I-t
SANDOS CARACOL ECO RESORT (MAYAN RIVIERA, MEXICO)
Sandos Caracol Eco Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico, is a 4-star property which offers guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region’s unbelievable natural beauty while learning about the local landscapes and wildlife. Designed for nature-lovers and explorers, this hotel lies in the middle of a lush green area at the edge of an exotic jungle, surrounded by cenotes, mangroves and natural lagoons.
This resort as has a vegan restaurant on-site and is known to be accommodating at restaurants throughout the resort. Bonus: this property is Rainforest Alliance Certified, avoids the use of plastic water bottles, and uses recycled paper for all printed material. Repopulation programs are also available for local wildlife and native plants.
PLATINUM YUCATAN PRINCESS ALL SUITES & SPA RESORT ADULTS ONLY
A 5-star all inclusive hotel overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean. A beachfront hotel, with a location that easily allows you to explore Playa del Carmen. Great for a romantic getaway.
I'm told the food is amazing. When you arrive you will be sent to concierge who can print out a letter in Spanish outlining your dietary needs. Carry to the restaurants and present it to the waiter/front of house where they will modify vegetarian dishes for you.
DOMINICAN TREE HOUSE VILLAGE
An all inclusive resort within the island of the Dominican Republic. The Tree House Cabins are hidden in a tropical valley that is located in the core of an exotic Caribbean jungle. Rope bridges and jungle paths join the cabins allow you to completely immerse yourself into the Caribbean experience.
They offer several package options to choose from depending on how “all inclusive” you want it to be. It’s not a 100% vegan resort, but they cater to vegans. Let them know in advance, or even when you check in and they will take care of you.
SERENITY RETREATS BELIZE
Not necessarily your traditional all-inclusive, however I think it's a unique alternative that belongs on my list. A complementary blend of Mayan, Buddhist and Jungle inspired accommodations are surrounded by two beautifully landscaped acres of private paradise within a tropical forest, just a mile from the Caribbean Sea, Corozal Bay. Lush tropical forest, a fresh water eco-pool with a trickling waterfall...all of this makes for a peaceful environment. A perfect getaway for anyone looking for a unique experience in a different kind of paradise on a dirt-road less travelled.
The property is completely plant-based and does all inclusive meal packages as an option (excluding the booze typically included in all inclusives). As well, inclusive classes for those interested in daily yoga/meditation or workshops.
Holidays don’t always have to be about lounging in the sun, and bingeing on food and drinks (although holidays like that can be wonderful!) – there are other all-inclusive vegan trip options that don't fit the traditional template. I am happy to make a personalized recommendation. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let's chat!
Create Your Own Vegan All-Inclusive Vacation
- Make sure you email or call the resort ahead of time and ask if vegan meals are possible. It’s always good to let them know in advance, just in case they need to buy some extra ingredients to make your meals.
- Tell them that you’re vegan when you make the a-la-carte restaurant reservations, and follow up when you reach the restaurant.
- At the buffet, if you’re unsure about any of the dishes, ask one of the kitchen staff members to speak with the chef to discuss what ingredients are used to prepare the meals.
- Sometimes it’s a matter of making it work. Usually there are always vegetables, potatoes, pasta, rice, and fruit available.
- Head off the resort for food sometimes. You will find some of the best food at exclusively vegan restaurants.
